Juvenile daughter caught shoplifting

Thursday, Oct 6, 2016 by Brian Laviage

My 16 year old daughter was caught shoplifting about $60 worth of makeup last weekend. She was charged and is awaiting a court date. This isn’t normal for her (as far as I know) and she said that her friends dared her to do it. I’m obviously upset and disappointed. What can we expect? Is there anything we should do now? I’m personally concerned about her getting accepted into college.

Hi Mike. I am certainly sorry to hear this happened. You do not want a theft charge on her record. This is considered a crime of moral turpitude and it looks really bad on applications and background checks when applying for college or jobs. We need to get all of the relevant information together regarding the incident, and we need to get all of her info together showing she is a good person, student, and member of the community to present to the prosecutor and get this thing dismissed so it will not go down as a conviction on her record.
